Note: this mix was tested in a Zojirushi BB-PAC20. The test was conducted at an elevation of 3,700 feet.
Prepared Pantry’s sour cream white gourmet bread machine mix produced an airy, soft loaf with a flaky crust. The crumb was moist and flavorful, and the overall texture felt rich without being heavy.
What exactly is sour cream?
Sour cream is cream that has been fermented with lactic acid bacteria, which gives it the tangy flavor and a thicker consistency. This mix includes sour cream powder, which is simply dehydrated sour cream. Powdered sour cream is convenient because it extends shelf life and keeps the ingredient available when fresh sour cream isn’t on hand.
Preparing the Sour Cream White Gourmet Bread Machine Mix
The package recommends adding water at 80°F (about 27°C). I used a Zojirushi bread machine with a preheat cycle, so I added room-temperature water and relied on the machine’s preheat. I also added the butter in chunks rather than melting it, because the preheat cycle takes care of warming ingredients.
If your machine does not have a preheat feature, follow the package instructions for water temperature and butter preparation. Prepared Pantry also provides directions for making the mix in a stand mixer, which is helpful for people who don’t use a bread machine.

I checked the dough after a few minutes of kneading and it looked well-formed; I didn’t need to add any extra flour or water. Important: this mix produces a high-rising loaf. It rose nearly to the top in my two-pound bread machine, so I would not recommend using it in a smaller machine.
The loaf was so soft that slicing it required a careful touch. The package lists 130 calories per slice based on 15 slices per loaf, but with a loaf this fluffy, getting 15 practical slices will be difficult.
Despite that, the flavor and texture make it worth it. This mix is a definite thumbs up.
Update: I slice and freeze extra loaves for later use. The frozen slices are excellent when toasted—delivering a pleasant crunch and a hint of sweetness that highlights the sour cream flavor.
Other favorite bread mixes
Here are two other Prepared Pantry mixes I enjoy and buy regularly.
Prepared Pantry New York Dill Rye Mix

This mix fills the kitchen with a dill-and-onion aroma while baking—think of the scent of sour cream and onion chips, but in bread form. It has a savory, fragrant profile that makes it great for sandwiches and alongside soups.
Prepared Pantry Black Russian (Pumpernickel) Bread

This mix bakes up with a deep rye aroma and a dense, cake-like crumb. The finished loaf has a rich flavor and substantial texture that pairs well with strong cheeses and hearty spreads.
