I have a mild cookbook obsession. My collection has outgrown the kitchen cabinet, so my cookbooks now live in their own shelving unit in my office. I read cookbooks and food magazines the way others devour novels.
When I’m excited about a cookbook, I preorder it so it arrives the day it’s released. That’s what I did for Alice Currah’s debut book, Savory Sweet Life, which hit shelves on June 5th. I love seeing recipes, stories, and photos move from a food blog to a printed book—there’s something special about holding those pages in your hands.
I met Alice a few years ago at BlogHer Food in San Francisco, and her site quickly became one of my favorites. Her warm, genuine voice makes readers feel at home in her kitchen, and her recipes are approachable yet creative. After a few pages, you’ll feel like she’s guiding you through each dish from her own stovetop.
Savory Sweet Life includes 100 beautifully photographed recipes organized by family occasions. Whether you need a menu for a birthday, a casual lunch with friends, or snacks for game night, Alice provides simple, thoughtful recipes that help create memorable moments.

One recipe stood out the moment I flipped through the book: chocolate chip cookies. Alice calls them “The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies Ever,” and I agree—they’re exceptional. I made them twice in two days. The dark brown sugar gives the cookies a deep, caramel-like flavor that complements crisp bottoms and soft, chewy centers. It’s no surprise this recipe is among the most popular on her blog.
You can find Alice on her blog, Savory Sweet Life, and on social media. Her recipes and photos are a delightful source of inspiration.
Because I think Alice’s cookbook is lovely, I’m giving three readers a chance to win a copy.

Savory Sweet Life’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yield: 4 dozen cookies
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
2 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 360°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
2. Using a hand or stand mixer, cream the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium-high speed for about 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla and mix for 2 minutes more. Reduce the mixer speed to medium-low and add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. When the dough has absorbed the dry ingredients, stir in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
3. Drop 2 tablespoons of dough (or use a medium cookie scoop) onto the prepared cookie sheet for each cookie, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and let the cookies rest for 2 minutes. Slide the parchment paper with the cookies onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes:
– Kosher salt can be substituted for the sea salt.
