Spicy Ranch Snack Mix Recipe: Zesty Party Mix Everyone Loves

This spicy ranch snack mix combines oyster crackers, cheese crackers, pretzels, white cheddar popcorn, and a zesty homemade ranch seasoning for a crowd-pleasing party snack. Cheesy, slightly spicy, and ready in about 10 minutes, it’s perfect for game nights, house parties, holidays, or long road trips. Grab a handful and enjoy.

These days my friends and I prefer cozy nights at home—game nights, movie nights, and the occasional Mario Kart session—so the snack table has become essential. While casual hangs don’t require anything elaborate, they do require satisfying, shareable snacks. This spicy ranch mix fills that role: easy to make and far more exciting than plain Chex mix because it’s tossed with a spicy, tangy ranch seasoning I learned to make in culinary school.

Snack mix is one of my go-to appetizers because it’s simple to prepare and always disappears fast. The homemade ranch seasoning—anchored by buttermilk powder for that classic tang—takes this mix up a notch. If you want a Hidden Valley-style boost, a tiny pinch of MSG can be added, but it’s optional.

Grab all your favorite snacks

White and brown bowls of cereal, pretzels, Cheez Its, peanuts, spices, oyster crackers, sandwich crackers, popcorn, and butter on a white counter.

For the mix, use a variety of crunchy components: pretzel chips, cheese crackers (like Cheez-Its), oyster crackers, cheese-filled sandwich crackers (like Ritz Bits), salted roasted peanuts, popcorn, and corn cereal (Chex-style) for that familiar texture. For the seasoning, gather buttermilk powder, onion powder, garlic powder, dried dill, chives, parsley, kosher salt, white or black pepper, dried mustard, and cayenne. Unsalted butter helps the seasoning adhere to the crackers and cereal.

Buttermilk powder is the key ingredient in the homemade ranch seasoning—its tang gives the mix authentic ranch flavor and stores well without refrigeration. If you like, store any leftover seasoning in a jar for up to three months.

Make the snack mix

Spread corn cereal, peanuts, pretzels, cheese crackers, oyster crackers, and sandwich crackers on a sheet pan and mix to combine.
Two steps to melting butter. In photo 1, a stick of butter is in a pot on a white counter. In photo 2, the butter is melted.
Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat or in 30-second intervals in the microwave.
Three steps to making spicy ranch snack mix. In photo 1, snacks are topped with ranch seasoning. In photo 2, a wood spoon mixes the snack mix together. In photo 3, the snack mix is baked on a sheet pan.
Pour melted butter and half the ranch seasoning evenly over the crackers, toss to coat, then bake until dry and crisp.

I recommend using a sheet pan rather than a bowl so the crackers and cereal lie flat; it’s much easier to distribute the butter and seasoning evenly that way.

Two steps to adding popcorn to snack mix. In photo 1, white cheddar popcorn is on a pan of snack mix. In photo 2, a wood spoon tosses the mix together.
Add the white cheddar popcorn after the mix comes out of the oven and toss quickly so the residual heat helps the seasoning stick.

Important: add the popcorn after baking. Popcorn baked with the mix can brown or burn in the oven, so sprinkle it in while the mix is still warm so the seasoning clings.

Re-crisp the snack mix

If the mix softens (especially in humid conditions), spread it on a sheet pan and bake at 200°F (93°C) for 5-minute intervals, stirring occasionally, until it’s crisp again.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups corn cereal, like Chex
  • 1 cup salted roasted peanuts
  • 2 cups pretzel chips
  • 2 cups cheese crackers, like Cheez-Its
  • 1 1/2 cups oyster crackers
  • 2 cups mini cheese sandwich crackers, like Ritz Bits
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 batch homemade ranch seasoning or store-bought
  • 4 cups white cheddar popcorn

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan
  • parchment paper
  • small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl
  • wood spatula or spoon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250°F (121°C). Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  • Pour the corn cereal, peanuts, pretzel chips, cheese crackers, oyster crackers, and mini cheese sandwiches onto the sheet pan and mix to combine.
  • Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat or in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals until fully melted.
  • Pour the melted butter evenly over the snack mix. Sprinkle half the ranch seasoning over the mix and gently stir to coat. Taste a cracker and add more seasoning or kosher salt if needed.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, tossing halfway through, until the crackers are dry to the touch and crisp. Immediately after removing from the oven, add the white cheddar popcorn and gently toss so the residual heat helps the seasoning adhere.
  • Allow the snack mix to cool completely, then store in an airtight container or zipper bag.

Notes

Customize with any favorite snacks, crackers, or chips—just keep quantities similar so the seasoning covers everything evenly.

Be cautious with added salt since many snack components are already salty; taste before adding more.

If the mix softens from humidity, re-crisp it in the oven at 200°F (93°C) for short intervals until crunchy.

Always add popcorn after baking to avoid burning it in the oven.
