My fiancé absolutely adores the beach. If it were up to him, we’d move to a place with white sand and turquoise water — probably far to the south, much to the dismay of our families. I, on the other hand, am built for Portland’s cool, cloudy weather; my recent sunburn makes that crystal clear. Still, one of his top priorities after we arrived in Cape Town was a day by the ocean.
We chose Muizenberg for our outing. It’s a well-known spot for swimmers and surfers, yet far enough from the city center that a Saturday morning visit still feels relaxed rather than overcrowded. The beach has a lively vibe and enough space to stroll without bumping into a hundred other people.
That said, Muizenberg is also known for its shark activity, which kept me firmly in shallow water. Even with lookouts on duty, I wasn’t tempted to wade past my ankles. My fiancé happily swam and surfed while I kept a watchful eye from the shore.
One of the most charming features of Muizenberg is its row of brightly colored changing huts. They caught my camera’s attention immediately and made for delightful photos. The colors and classic seaside feel give the beach a cheerful, nostalgic character.
The area is easy to access and, conveniently for us, offered free parking within a short ten-minute drive down the highway. It’s a relaxed spot with a nice mix of activity and open space — perfect for a weekend escape. I can definitely see us returning many Saturdays to enjoy the surf, the scenery, and the colorful huts that make Muizenberg so distinctive.
