When we visited Edinburgh, Scotland, a stop for Afternoon Tea at the beautiful Signet Library was high on our list. The city’s medieval architecture feels like something from a film, and enjoying tea in such a historic setting made the experience even more memorable.
Our trip included a British Isles cruise with Princess Cruises, and Edinburgh was one of the ports. The Signet Library sits in Parliament Square and is occupied by the WS Society. The building itself is stunning: you sit in cozy nooks surrounded by hundreds of books and beautiful period architecture while enjoying tea and light bites. It feels both elegant and intimate, with an atmosphere that invites quiet conversation and relaxation.
The food at the Signet Library was excellent. We enjoyed a selection of tea sandwiches, mini tarts and pastries that were all carefully prepared. One playful highlight was a meatball served in a tiny terra-cotta planter—cute and delicious. After the savory portion, a tiered tray arrived with scones, cookies, jam and panna cotta for dessert. The portions were satisfying without being overwhelming, and the flavors were well balanced. We left feeling full and happy.
Signet Library Afternoon Tea Dress Code
The dress code at the Signet Library is relaxed but tasteful. You don’t need formal wear, yet a little thought in your outfit feels appropriate for the setting. I wore a dress, boots and a leather jacket; my companion wore black jeans, a button-down shirt and a warm coat because the day was overcast. Smart casual attire is a good guideline for afternoon tea here.

We didn’t have a reservation; we arrived as soon as they opened at 11am on a Sunday and were fortunate to be seated. The library accepts a limited number of walk-ins each day and reserves most seats, so it’s advisable to call ahead or book in advance to secure your preferred time. This limited availability contributes to the intimate, curated feel of the experience. The service focuses on quality and handmade items rather than maximizing occupancy.
The tea menu is extensive, offering a wide range of blends and infusions. You can request unlimited refills of tea and coffee, and the staff are happy to recommend selections if you’re unsure. We allowed the host to choose our teas, which made the experience easy and fun, especially with so many appealing options.
Signet Library Afternoon Tea Price
Surprisingly, the cost of afternoon tea at the Signet Library felt reasonable for the quality and setting. When we visited, the price worked out to about $34 per person, which included unlimited tea and coffee. Cocktails are available for an extra charge and are well worth trying—especially the tea-based cocktails that blend infusions with spirits. If you prefer a lighter option, sharing a tea pairing can be a good choice.
The library’s cocktails stood out for their creativity. They use small-batch gin in some tea cocktails, which creates a refreshing balance of botanicals and tea flavors—a combination that pairs exceptionally well together. Gin and tea are a popular match in the UK and the Signet Library offers its own twists on these classic pairings.
Finding the Signet Library can be a little tricky if you don’t know what to look for. The entrance is understated: a single door flanked by planter trees leads into a lobby that resembles a private office or firm. A hostess at the front desk will guide you, and stairs near the entrance lead up to the tea rooms. The discreet entry adds to the feeling of discovering a hidden gem in the heart of the city.
Take time while you are in Edinburgh to enjoy the city itself. The streets, historic buildings and views are remarkable and worth exploring before or after your tea. Our visit to the Signet Library was one highlight among other enjoyable experiences during our British Isles cruise, and it remains a standout memory for the charm, food and atmosphere.
